Hiccough

Hiccough, or hiccup, starts with an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm which is the muscle at the bottom of your chest, and this in turn causes an abrupt inhalation of air and a spasmodic closure of the vocal folds, also called the glottis, in the throat. The characteristic "hiccough" sound is caused by the sudden intake of air hitting the closed glottis, and this involuntary action is then repeated several times per minute. Hiccough can come from conditions affecting a variety of organs.

Causes:

  • Common causes of hiccoughs include drinking carbonated beverages or alcohol.
  • Laughing for a long time.
  • Eating or drinking too much or too fast.
  • Swallowing hot or irritating substances, and being nervous or excited.
  • Hiccoughs can also be caused by certain drugs or medical conditions.

Symptoms:

  • A single or a series of breathing.
  • Might show as a brief unexpected full body tremor.
  • Normal breath, with sudden momentary pain of the throat.
  • Coma and stupor.
  • Convulsions.
  • Sleep disturbances.

Diagnosing Hiccough:
  • For the common hiccups that will usually stop on their own, home remedies are generally recommended to cure the symptoms.
  • For more severe, persistent hiccups, the doctor may try medications to manage the patient's hiccups.
  • Holding breath as much as possible stops Hiccough.
  • Diverting attention stops Hiccough.
  • If Hiccough is due to indigestion then taking water with soda helps. Remember not to drink anything hot.

Natural remedies:

  • Take a juice of basil, solanum trilobatum and solanum xanthocarpum. Mix with honey and drink it.
  • Take the rock salt and mixed with the ghee then eat.
  • Guava fruit and honey have the capacity to reduce the hiccup problem, so if you take a cup of guava fruit juice and 2 teaspoon of honey, then you mix both the things properly and drink it.
